A Day In Austin

Having a full day in Austin, I took some time to stroll around the Capitol grounds. Many of the statues there honor the Confederate soldiers who sacrificed their lives fighting for liberty and freedom against the northern aggressors. At least that is what I learned by reading the plaques. Most of the statues were erected in the early 1900s and paid for by surviving Confederates. Another statue honors the early Spanish settlers.

Even though La Quinta is not too fancy being the cheapest downtown hotel, there is a pool to relax by of which Sam and I took advantage. We enjoyed it despite lots of traffic and construction noise.

Hundreds of bats, thousands of bats, millions and billions and trillions of bats ...
Walked to the Ann Richards Bridge spanning Lady Bird Lake where the world's largest bat colony exists. At dusk thousands and thousands of bats fly out. Actually it is estimated that the colony has 1.5 million bats. It was quite a sight to behold.

We ended the day with pizza, music at Maggie Mays, and a walk past the Capitol on the way to the hotel.
